Most experts agree that Nissan has pioneered the segment of electric cars, at least when it comes to models that come at affordable price stickers. For a long time, Nissan Leaf was the first mainstream electric vehicle that comes to mind. However, things have changed and today’s market for electric vehicles is growing rapidly. Of course, Nissan isn’t just sitting and waiting. There is a brand-new model on the way, called the 2022 Nissan Ariya.
Compared to Leaf, this model will take a little bit different approach. Instead of a hatchback body style, it will come as a crossover. Also, it will go more upscale, with a much finer cabin and a long list of features, whether it’s about tech goodies or convenience. Naturally, the focus will once again be on the all-electric performance. At this point, we know that the new crossover will come in two variants when it comes to battery size.
We expect that the 2022 Nissan Ariya will hit the North American market sometime in the second half of the year.
2022 Nissan Ariya Performance
First things first! Despite that the styling and interior design definitely look amazing, we will start with the aspect that’s probably the most interesting. Of course, we are talking about the performance and it looks like there will be two variants when it comes to power. Standard models will come with a single electric motor, mounted on the front axle. The max power should go around 215 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, which promises decent performance.
However, the 2022 Nissan Ariya will be far more ambitious than the Leaf in terms of performance. Therefore, the Japanese manufacturer will also offer a dual-motor version, with an all-wheel drive. This version will be good for about 389 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, and those numbers promise some pretty solid performances. Allegedly, this model will be able to hit sixty in about five seconds.
Battery and Range
From what we know so far, the 2022 Nissan Ariya will come in two variants when it comes to battery capacity. Base models will feature a 63-kWh battery pack, while the dual-motor version will come with a notably bigger 87-kWh unit. The latter should be able to make around 300 miles on a single charge. On the other side, the base version should be in Leaf’s territory, which means a max range of around 220 miles, which is also a decent number.
Of course, we count on all kinds of charging options in the offer. Naturally, you may count on the ability to charge at public stations, also with a DC fast charger. Furthermore, this crossover will support home charging, whether it’s about 110- or 240-Volt outlets.
2022 Nissan Ariya Redesign
Besides solid performance, the 2022 Nissan Ariya will also stand out with its exterior design. Just one look at the rendering photo and you can clearly see that this is going to be one of the most attractive models in the class. By the way, this crossover will compete with a wide range of EVs, including Hyundai Kona Electric, Tesla Model Y etc.
The production model takes a lot of inspiration from the 2019 concept and a great thing to know is that the serial model won’t look much different at all. This refers to both the front face and the overall shape. The latest iteration of the well-known V-Motion grille is here, though it’s been modified in order to accentuate the model’s all-electric character. Dimensions are also about to remain the same as in concept, which means that you may count on 109.3 inches in wheelbase and nearly 181 inches in total lengths. Those are quite typical numbers for the segment of compact crossovers.
Even though electric vehicles have become a common thing on the market, they still have one big drawback. They are expensive and in order to make them more affordable, manufacturers usually spare on the interior quality. However, that won’t be the case with the 2022 Nissan Ariya. This crossover will look very upscale and one of the best proofs that Nissan takes this aspect pretty seriously is the list of standard equipment. Both the infotainment screen and digital instrument cluster will be standard and both will feature 12.3 inches diagonally. The list of standard equipment will also include the ProPilot Assist 2.0. This suite includes all kinds of advanced driver aids, from lane centering and advanced adaptive cruise control to automatic emergency braking.
Details about the passenger and cargo space are yet to come, but we have no doubt that this model will be able to accommodate adults in both rows of seats.
2022 Nissan Ariya Release Date and Price
As we already mentioned, the 2022 Nissan Ariya will arrive sometime in the second half of the year. When it comes to the price, base models should go around 40.000 dollars. Models with a bigger 87-kWh battery should start at around $45.000.
