Mitsubishi’s plan to deliver a new crossover is almost ready. The Ford is planning to ditch basically every nameplate that is not a crossover or SUV, and the Mitsu is following the same path. After turning the Eclipse car into a crossover, the same will happen with the Lancer. The 2020 Mitsubishi Lancer Cross will arrive as a compact crossover that will slot between the Outlander Sport and Outlander models.
Of course, the 2020 Lancer Cross will undergo some drastic changes. For the start, the exterior will look sporty and with the coupe-like roof. Moreover, a two-door version could hit the production. The interior will get astonishing technology and it will be based on the Eclipse Cross model. Under the hood, both gasoline and diesel engines are available, along with the probable hybrid drivetrain.
2020 Mitsubishi Lancer Cross exterior changes
The exterior of the 2020 Mitsubishi Lancer Cross will look sporty and aggressive. Of course, the current Lancer is a famous sedan with the long history in rally racing. However, the design language won’t be classic Mitsubishi. Whatsoever, Lancer Cross could show us the company’s new design language and the direction where is Mitsubishi going with the new vehicles.
Front-end sports extended headlights with longer LED strips. Fog lamps are sitting in the bumper that looks aggressive and sharp. Wider front fenders and bigger side skirts are showing how will design depart from the Lancer car model. The rear part adds a spoiler and the P-shaped taillights. A two-door Lancer Cross could become a reality as everything is a speculation for now.
2020 Mitsubishi Lancer Cross interior could be based on the Eclipse Cross model
The interior of the all-new 2020 Mitsubishi Lancer Cross is based on the latest Eclipse Cross model. Thanks to that, we can already have a much clearer picture of the cabin. For the start, the interior adds upscale materials and even plastic trims are looking great.
The modern instrument cluster looks very modern and most of the features are digital, instead of analog. Infotainment system adds a large display and the technology inside the Lancer Cross will be on another level.
2020 Mitsubishi Lancer Cross powertrain
Another department where the 2020 Mitsubishi Lancer Cross will borrow something from the Eclipse Cross is the engine department. With that in mind, the new Lancer Cross will arrive with two engine options. First and the standard is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline unit. It delivers 152 horses and 184 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is rated at 29 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in the city. The second and optional powertrain is 2.2-liter turbodiesel that can produce over 120 hp and slightly better torque figures.
The gasoline engine offers a CVT transmission and the diesel choice is available with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. A hybrid drivetrain could be in the offer too. We already saw Eclipse Cross and Outlander Sport models with the hybrid variants, so the Lancer Cross could be another model. According to some speculations, an electric motor should add additional 90 horsepower and improve the mileage as well.
2020 Mitsubishi Lancer Cross price and release date
The price is perhaps the biggest mystery for now as no one knows the Mitsubishi’s plan for its newest crossover. If the Japanese maker plans to put the 2020 Mitsubishi Lancer Cross into the premium compact crossover segment, the price could go over $30,000.
If not, Lancer Cross could slot between the Eclipse Cross and Outlander models and could cost around $24,000. The 2020 Lancer Cross will go on sale by the end of 2019.
